“Listen and hear my voice; pay attention and hear what I say.” (Isaiah 28:23)
God is always speaking to us. Every day He speaks to us. This should not surprise us. God reigns. He is our creator, the giver of life and the One who sustains all life. Therefore, we should pay attention to what He is speaking to us collectively and individually.
The Bible speaks of many occasions where God spoke to people directly. Moses heard God speaking to him through a burning bush (Exodus 3). Saul encountered Jesus on the Damascus road, hearing Him audibly: “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” (Acts 9:4). God called and spoke to Samuel when he was still a child (1Samuel 3).
Have you heard God speaking to you? If your answer is “No”, then I want to assure you that God is speaking to you, even today. We may not have the same experiences as Moses, Saul or Samuel. However, God continues to speak to us and especially now, in the last days.
The primary way in which God is speaking to us today is through His written Word. That is where we get understanding about who God is, and instruction about how we should live and engage with God and other people. God also speaks to us through many other ways. Here are some examples:
- God speaks to us through dreams. The well-known dreamers from the Bible are Joseph and Nebuchadnezzar. God is still speaking to us today through our dreams. “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.” (Joel 2:28)
- God also speaks through visions while awake. Peter had a vision (Acts 10:9-16) that gave him understanding that the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross bought salvation for all, not just the Israelites, the blood descendants of Jacob.
- God also speaks to us during heavenly encounters. In 2 Corinthians 12 Paul speaks about his visits to the third heaven and paradise. The Apostle John received visions of the events that will take place at the end of the age. These things are recorded in the Book of Revelation and are presently unfolding around us.
- God also speaks through numbers. We are familiar with the number 666 in reference to the anti-Christ (Revelation 13:17-18). God speaks through all numbers (also see Numbers 1:2).
- God speaks through prophets and seers like Jeremiah, Isaiah, Elijah and Apostle John.
- God speak through nature, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.” (Psalm 19:1-2)
- God also speaks through unusual ways like through a donkey (Numbers 22:28) and in Luke 19:40 Jesus speaks of the stones crying out.
Our God is the same yesterday, today and forever. He spoke to His people in the past and He is still speaking today. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we become His children. The Word states that God’s children know His voice (John 10:27). God is speaking to you today. Make sure that you set aside time to hear His voice and to answer when He speaks to you by being obedient to what He calls you to do.
My Prayer
Father Ahayah, thank you that you are speaking to us. Father, please forgive us for not believing that you are speaking to us and for not making the time to listen to Your voice. Father, in Your mercy, please open our spiritual eyes and ears to hear You better. Thank you that You have given us Your living Word. Please grant us revelation and understanding to comprehend what you are saying to us personally as we read our Bibles. Father, we love You. It is our joy to hear You speaking to us. Please do not stop and please guide us until we hear You more clearly. We pray in the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus the Christ. Aman.
