"Again, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them" (Matt.18:19-20).
We are continuing our discussion on how we should pray. Today's scripture is directing us to praying with others. We all know about the powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost upon the disciples who stayed together after Jesus ascended to heaven, devoting themselves in one accord to prayer. "When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting" (Acts 2:1-2).
And while still on earth, Jesus sent his disciples out in pairs of two to spread the Gospel (Mark 6:7). The Book of Ecclesiastes tells of the benefits of working with others: "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken" (Ecc. 4:9-12).
We also remember how Moses was supported during the battle of the Israelites against the Amalekites. "As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword" (Exo. 17:11-13).
Brothers and Sisters, let us heed Paul's advice, "not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near" (Heb.10:25).
My Prayer
Thank you Father AHaYah for the instruction we find in Your Word. Father, we see that when we seek you according to Your will in agreement with another, You will hear our prayers. Father, please send us someone to pray with. Someone with the same mindset and with the same reverence for You. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Aman.
